The Renault Captur offers plenty of room for four adults, as well as one of the biggest boot spaces in its class.
Refinement is another one of its strengths, with little road and wind noise at speed, and only minimal vibration from the efficient diesel engine.
In fact, we just wish the engines on offer were a bit punchier, and that the cabin didn¡¯t feel quite as cheap.

The Captur has an all-turbocharged engine range. The entry-level 0.9-litre three-cylinder petrol comes with the same five-speed manual gearbox as the 1.5 diesel, plus there¡¯s also a 1.2 petrol that¡¯s available only with a six-speed auto ¡¯box. The 0.9 is fine at low speeds, but the 1.2 is a bit hesitant and lazy, while the diesel feels lively enough around town, if a bit underpowered on faster roads.

The Captur is based on the Renault Clio, and this shows in its hatchback-like handling. Despite the raised ride height, which gives it the look of a micro-SUV, the Captur corners predictably and without too much body roll. Its suspension is good at soaking up urban bumps and potholes, too, but you¡¯re always aware of imperfections in the road surface at higher speeds.

Engine noise is well suppressed in all versions, while wind and road noise are also kept to a minimum. True, the rear suspension can get a bit noisy over bumpy roads, but the Captur is still one of the quietest cars of its type.

The Captur is good value, undercutting most of its rivals on purchase price. The diesel and 0.9-litre petrol models promise low running costs, too, but avoid the 1.2-litre auto if you can, because it¡¯ll cost you more in both fuel and depreciation. Company car tax bills are also low if you avoid the 1.2 auto.

You get a bright and interestingly styled cabin, but there are quite a few hard plastics around and some of the switchgear feels a bit flimsy. Reliability information on the Captur is limited at the moment, but Renault finished in the bottom third in the latest JD Power customer satisfaction survey.

What¡¯s more, it achieved a maximum five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating, and performed well for adult, child and pedestrian protection. Deadlocks – which prevent a door being opened, even if the window is smashed – and a Thatcham-approved immobiliser help protect your car from thieves.

You sit high up in the Captur, and there¡¯s loads of space and adjustment, but the seat is a bit short of lower-back support and there¡¯s a big blind spot over each shoulder. Higher-spec Capturs come with a colour touch-screen that¡¯s simple to use, but the more conventional controls in cheaper models are fiddly.

The sliding rear bench is a useful feature, particularly because it can be adjusted by those sitting on it or from the boot. It¡¯s just a shame that the bench can be moved only as one unit, although the seatbacks do fold flat in a 60/40 split and there¡¯s enough space for two adults to be very comfortable. The boot is impressively practical, offering a variable boot floor and 455 litres of space, while Dynamique models and above also have removable seat covers.

Entry-level __EXPRESSION__ models come with alloy wheels, cruise control, Bluetooth, aux-in and USB sockets, and electric windows all round, but you have to upgrade to __EXPRESSION__+ to get air-conditioning. We¡¯d go for a Dynamique Media Nav model, though, which adds the user-friendly touch-screen system, complete with sat-nav. Dynamique S Media Nav versions also come with rear parking sensors, heated front seats, and a contrast roof should you want it, but they¡¯re pricey.
